Alright, folks! It's the moment you've waited for! ;D Well, it's between trekfan's Fleeting, and gojirob's Green Grass - A Take on Judgement Day. Now, choose the ultimate winner of the Borrowed Toys Challenge.

Two good pieces--but the fact that Gojirob's entry was written fresh for the challenge, and had to be completed within the time restraints tips the scales in his favor most decisively.  I think Goji definitely deserves to win!

Voted for TF again.  Not sure what time restraints has to do with it, but I felt his was the slightly better piece.  Gojirob's entry was excellent, and he did not make this an easy decision for me.

A piece that is written BEFORE the challenge--and therefore NOT written under a deadline--is written under an advantaged situation, compared to a piece that is written specifically FOR the challenge and therefore must be completed according to the deadline.  That person does not have the benefit of extra time, and therefore in my opinion has written under a more rigorous requirement.  Therefore, with all other things equal (and I felt both pieces were well-written), I felt I should give my vote to the piece that was written under more challenging circumstances.

Well regardless of the timeframe it takes to write a story, whether one hundred years or a minute, the piece should make me laugh, cry, or feel for the characters. With it being a challenge to use 'borrowed toys' I felt the story ought to have a feel for the characters or universe from which borrowed. Both authors did make me feel for the characters involved and although I'd have more familiarity with Steff's I do think Gojirob did evoke the unique horror of the Judgement Day universe. That said, trekfan touched my heart with his piece on Cait Scott. I felt it was superbly in line Arc of the Wolf with the tone matching the writing of its borrowed universe. So I'm going to vote again for TF.

I get what you're saying, Nerys.  Normally, I also give an edge to new pieces, but in this case, the challenge was open to old entries from the very start.  That made a difference to me.  And technically, trekfan's was new to this site, wasn't it?  I had certainly never seen it before.  Myself, I have a hundred scenes written that I may not plan to use, but if one of them fits a challenge, I clean it up and post it (Nice Running Into You ... was one of these).  As long as it's never been posted on the site before, it counts as "new," even if it's been saved on my hard drive for a year and a half, no?

I'm not arguing you should have voted differently -- they were both great pieces.  I'm just saying I can see both sides of the "new vs. old" discussion.  (Because everyone cares what I think.  ::) Or maybe not.)

Both were very good...that's why it came down to new vs. old in order to make the decision.  It's not a slam against TF at all.

(Plus...I believe I voted for TF in the last challenge. ;) )

Well congrats to... nobody! ;D It seems there's ANOTHER tie! But it would be pointless to have another runoff.

Well TF and GJ, we'll be needing a challenge! If you'd like, you can collaborate on a challenge... or if perhaps one doesn't want the responsibility ;) of issueing a challenge, the other can... or, you can turn it over to the Ad Astra public! Either way, let me know! You two will have two weeks to pm me your challenge.

Congrats!
